Overview

An improved version of the 2016 (as well as the 2010), the 2020 Château Bélair-Monange is deep purple-hued with an utterly sensational perfume of crème de cassis, smoky tobacco, crushed stone, and sappy flowers, with an incredible iron, almost bloody character that shockingly reminds me slightly of a great vintage of Petrus. Based on 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, it's dense, concentrated, and powerful, yet also flawlessly balanced, seamless, and pure. This is a legendary Saint-Emilion that will keep for 50+ years. Drink 2026-2076.

The 2020 Bélair-Monange has a more backward nose with dense black fruit. There is a very noticeable cedar/Cabernet element here that indicates that it might be Lafleur. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins—another top Right Bank wine with a cashmere/creamy texture. It's lavish and beautifully composed on the ethereal finish. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. By Neal Martin January 2024
