Issuing entirely from the 2019 vintage, Piper-Heidsieck’s new NV Extra-Brut Blanc de Noirs Essentiel, disgorged in March 2023 with a dosage of five grams per liter, has turned out very well. Drawn from vineyards across the Montagne de Reims, the Marne Valley and the Côte des Bar—an assemblage of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier—it opens with captivating aromas of orange zest, cherry and nashi pear, mingling with quince and a subtle touch of smoky reduction. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, balancing the vintage’s ripeness with invigorating tension. Enlivened by a pillowy mousse, it is laden with succulent but vibrant acids that carry the wine to a lingering, mouthwatering finish. This cuvée reflects a step forward in viticulture; though not certified organic, the fruit is sourced from largely thoughtfully farmed vineyards. By Kristaps Karklins October 2025

The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs Essentiel is a blend of eighty-four percent Pinot Noir and sixteen percent Pinot Meunier. This wine contains 28% reserves and was aged for over three years on lees. Vivid yellow and red plum notes appear on the nose, signaling a sense of juiciness. The palate is surprisingly slender and poised, taut almost, with a lovely firmness reminiscent of firm but juicy apple flesh and a directness that comes with an edge of salt and a slight white pepper vibe. Fine mousse adds to the sense of elegance and the fruit reappears juicily on the finish. Dosage is 5 grams per liter. Disgorged: April 2024. By Anne Krebiehl MW December 2025
