Salon Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil Brut 1988 (75 CL)

A magnum gifted to celebrate New Years Eve 1999, so the first beverage of the new millennium. I was amazed how primal this champagne tasted. Still that steely, citrus nose with hints of pear. Takes time to open up in the glass. The palate has superb definition and balance, not quite as intense if flavour as I imagined, still giving little away at the moment. After 20 minutes the finish develops a biscuit note that lends it a little more character. Needs another five years. Tasted January 2000. (NM, 6/2008)
