The 2023 Syrah Distenta V has turned out every bit as magnificent as I had hoped from barrel. Focused and extraordinarily layered, the 2023 has put on considerable weight in the cellar without sacrificing the lift and energy that were so compelling from the outset. Exotic spice, violets, blueberry and crushed rocks give way to darker, more savory layers of blood orange, incense, mocha and game. Iodine and mentholated herbs linger on the finish. There is tremendous density here, but also the hallmark Krankl polish and a sense of completeness that is impossible to miss. What a wine.

Sporting a vivid deep purple hue, the 2023 Distenta V Syrah is based on 85.8% Syrah, 3.7% Petite Sirah, 3.3% Mourvèdre, 5.5% Grenache, and a touch of white varieties, vinified with 11% whole clusters and aged roughly 23 months in 63% new French oak. Blackberries, smoked meats, graphite, ground pepper, and hints of violets all define the nose, and it's deep and full-bodied on the palate, with a powerful, inward profile, ripe tannins, and a great finish.
