Deep ruby. Expressive black and blue fruit aromas are complemented by suggestions of cracked pepper, olive, espresso and candied flowers. Juicy and expansive on the palate, offering ripe blueberry, cherry-cola and baking spice flavors that slowly firm up through the back half. Finishes long and gently chewy, with building smokiness and even tannins lending subtle grip.

The 2019 Saint Joseph Les Côtes is outstanding and has a classic, darker fruited, mineral-laced style as well as notes of ground pepper, iodine, bouquet garni, and assorted meatiness. Medium to full-bodied and nicely balanced, with ripe tannins, it’s ideal for drinking over the coming decade. This cuvée comes from a single lieu-dit in the southern part of the appellation, near Mauves, and is roughly 80% destemmed and brought up in used barrels. By Jeb Dunnuck February 2022
